Author: Harry Turtledove
Publisher: Del Rey/Ballantine : New York , 1997
A generation after the South won the American Civil War, a new conflict is ignited after the Confederate States annex large swathes of Mexican territory. A large cast of protagonists, ranging from disgraced former president Abraham Lincoln to cattleman Theodore Roosevelt to muck-raking journalist Samuel Clemens, tell the story of America's second war between the states.
Turtledoves dense and multifaceted mixture of war story and political intrigue presents a grimy and atmospheric version of 1880's America. He draws on a huge cast of historical and fictional characters to create a theatrical, yet believable story. The casual racism of many of the protagonists is as disturbing as it is realistic. Readers who enjoyed Turtledoves earlier work, "the Guns of the South" will appreciate this saga of speculative fiction.
How few remain won the Sidewise Award for Alternate History in 1997, and was also nominated for the Nebula Award for Best Novel in 1998.
